About the civic exam
Since January 1, 2026, the civic exam is mandatory for any application for a multi-year residence permit, a resident card or naturalisation. The official quiz consists of 40 questions to be answered in 45 minutes, with a pass mark of 80% (32/40).

The civic exam is a 40-question multiple-choice quiz about the values, history and institutions of France. Mandatory since January 1, 2026 for multi-year residence permits, resident cards or naturalisation, it must be taken at an OFII-approved centre.
You need at least 32 correct answers out of 40, i.e. an 80% pass rate. The time limit is 45 minutes.
The 7 topics are: Republican values, secularism, fundamental rights, gender equality, citizen's duties, institutions, and French history & geography.
Yes, you can retake the exam after a failure. A waiting period may apply according to OFII rules. Use this quiz to practise as many times as you need.
